Environment-Friendly Construction at Manhattanville

Arthur J. “Art” Samberg founded and spearheaded Pequot Capital Management, the world’s largest hedge fund in 2000, and wound down its operations in 2009. He has been a long-serving co-chairman of Columbia Business School’s Board of Overseers and remains as a board member. Art J. Samberg’s multimillion contributions to Columbia University include pledging $25 million toward the construction of Manhattanville.

Manhattanville is located in Harlem, New York’s west portion, and home to Columbia University’s new campus comprising 17 acres. The Manhattanville Campus will include faculty and student housing, community spaces, graduate-level schools, and research centers. Columbia participates in the New York Building Foundation’s Construction for a Livable City program, which aims to bring effective management of construction sites and improve local community relationships.

In partnership with the Environmental Defense Fund, the construction of Manhattanville uses the most advanced clean construction techniques guaranteeing the lowest attainable carbon dust emissions, vibrations, and sound in construction activity. Pollution emissions are minimized using only the most recent EPA-approved diesel engine equipment, equipment mufflers are used, as well as portable noise barriers. Among other initiatives, over 90 percent of demolition building materials have been recycled.
